Turkeys belong to the group of birds closely related to the domesticated chicken, pea fowl guinea fowls and quails. They are indigenous to North and South America and were brought to Africa by the colonial administration in the 18th century. The type found in back yard production systems in east and central Africa is the small breasted turkey. This is the focus of this technical material. However it is important to realise that commercial barn production system is dependent on highly bred artificially produced and intensively fed bird with very high growth rate found in North and South America and Europe. The latter can only be sourced from breeder companies and organizations.
